This year Kenyans celebrated World Blood Donor Day in Nakuru at the Nyayo Gardens. The celebrations began on 12th through to the climax date- 14th June 2009.The event was sponsored by World Health Organization (WHO), Telkom Kenya and Ministry of Health- National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS).

A procession which was held on the 14th June kicked off at the Nakuru Regional Blood Transfusion Centre ending at the Nyayo Gardens. Among highlights of the days events were speeches by chief guests, provision of awards for best donating schools, universities, corporate organizations, best male and female donors among others together with performances by Tear Group, Factual Films and Telkom Kenya Brand Ambassador and musician Jua Cali.

The awards aided in highlighting the celebrations theme which is to appreciate voluntary and regular blood donors for their generous heroic life saving act of donating blood and saving lives. All those who donated blood during the celebration were given branded T-shirts as incentives. A total of 463 units of blood were collected over the four days.

During the event, the benefits accrued from Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) were emphasized. These included sustainability of blood donation activities and availability of safe blood for needy Kenyans. Kenyans were encouraged to stay safe and be regular non- remunerated blood donors. “Blood is like a parachute, when you need it, you actually need it” – Dr. Kimani of CDC.
