This year
Kenyans celebrated World Blood Donor
Day in Nakuru at the Nyayo Gardens.
The celebrations began on 12th through
to the climax date- 14th June 2009.The
event was sponsored by World Health
Organization (WHO), Telkom Kenya and
Ministry of Health- National Blood
Transfusion Service (NBTS).
A procession which was held on the
14th June kicked off at the Nakuru
Regional Blood Transfusion Centre
ending at the Nyayo Gardens. Among
highlights of the days events were
speeches by chief guests, provision
of awards for best donating schools,
universities, corporate organizations,
best male and female donors among
others together with performances
by Tear Group, Factual Films and Telkom
Kenya Brand Ambassador and musician
Jua Cali.
The awards aided in highlighting
the celebrations theme which is to
appreciate voluntary and regular blood
donors for their generous heroic life
saving act of donating blood and saving
lives. All those who donated blood
during the celebration were given
branded T-shirts as incentives. A
total of 463 units of blood were collected
over the four days.
During the event, the benefits accrued
from Public Private Partnerships (PPPs)
were emphasized. These included sustainability
of blood donation activities and availability
of safe blood for needy Kenyans. Kenyans
were encouraged to stay safe and be
regular non- remunerated blood donors.
