Corporate Blood Donor Programs

Every 3 minutes, someone in Kenya needs blood…..

Corporates Day was successfully conducted on 14th to 16th December in Kisumu - 105
Units of Blood were Collected.

The Safaricom Blood For Life Drive Last stop was in Nairobi on 5th to 9th December and was successfully conducted in Four Stations within the City. 390 Units of Blood were collected.

The Campaign has raised 7000 Units of Blood which goes a long way to reduce the
shortfall of Blood in the Country.

The donations cover the month of December a period when there is an intense need of
blood in our community due to : -

  • Increased spread of childhood malaria.
  • High incidents of Road traffic accidents.
  • Closure of schools hence crisis at the Blood Bank as school children
contribute greatly to the country's blood needs.

Corporate Blood Donor Program

BLF has been working amongst corporate organizations in urban centers in inducting employees as regular blood donors these include, Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa and has in this year been able to expand to Eldoret and Nakuru . This goes in line with our Mission of ensuring that all Blood Banks countrywide have a steady supply of Blood at all times.

Since September 2004, 60 corporate’s have been inducted and engage the Blood Donor Program as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility and are actively involved and support in Blood Donation, amongst them, Safaricom, General Motors, Brookside Dairy, GlaxoSmithKline, Standard chartered Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank amongst many others.

The foundation has been conducting education seminars for this organizations aimed at dispelling the fears associated with blood donation and education on the accruing benefits both to the donor and society at large. The organizations are at the same time encouraged to incorporate blood donation into their CSR activities. Blood donation is probably the only CSR activity that requires no budgetary commitment from these organizations. In the long term BLF hopes to recruit a sufficient number of organizations to ensure an adequate supply of safe blood for our hospitals at all times especially given that the shelf life of blood is only 30 days thus the need for regular donors. BLF targets to induct 100 corporations by the end of March 2006. The target organizations will be based in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu and donations will be for blood banks based in the respective towns.

In our Mandate to work with corporate bodies, We have adapted different approaches for effective mobilization

One way which BLF has adapted to ensure sufficient safe blood is through partnership with the private sector in mobilizing local resources to recruit blood donors.

Safaricom ( The leading mobile phone service provider) has heeded to this call hence the birth of the “Safaricom Blood for life Drive,” Campaign which mainly aims at bridging the gaps of shortfall of Blood during the months of April, August and December when schools are closed by bringing on board adult donors through awareness creation and education .

The overall goal of the “Safaricom Blood for Life Drive” campaign is to reduce the shortfall in the blood supply by 12% by end of 2006 and by 25% by the end of 2007.
